In 2022, the residents of Upper and Lower Buckatabon Lakes founded the Upper and Lower Buckatabon Lakes District. This site is a resource for its residents to find information on the Upper and Lower Buckatabon Lakes District's meetings, leadership, budget, vision, current and future projects, and its past accomplishments. The Lake District is guided by the principles that these lakes should be protected and preserved for generations to come.
Rick Schwandt
We are deeply saddened to share the passing of our Lake District Treasurer, Rick Schwandt, whose life was tragically cut short while he was vacationing in Maui with his family. Rick was a steady, dedicated presence in our community, and his commitment to the well-being of Lake Buckatabon was felt in the roles he served.
Rick cared deeply for our lakes, our environment, and the generations who will enjoy this place after us. Through his years of service—as Treasurer, volunteer, neighbor, and friend—he brought warmth, thoughtfulness, and genuine passion to the work he did. Though many of us knew him simply as the friendly face you were always glad to run into, his contributions were meaningful and lasting.
Rick will be greatly missed, and we are grateful for the time, energy, and heart he shared with our District. Our thoughts are with his family during this difficult time.

Hello Spring from the Upper and Lower Buckatabon Lakes!
As the ice gives way and our shorelines start waking up for the season, the District has been busy preparing for a productive and well‑informed year on the water.
At our February 2nd Board meeting, several important projects were set in motion. We began work on updating and archiving historical materials on the website, and many sections are currently under construction. Our goal is to have these refreshed and available by May, providing residents with clearer access to long‑term lake data and District history.
We are pleased to share that the District has contracted with UW–Oshkosh to staff the boat landing this summer as part of the Clean Boats Clean Waters program — and we received a grant to help support this work. These efforts will strengthen our prevention of aquatic invasive species and improve education for boaters throughout the season.
This year will also bring more detailed scientific work on both lakes. Onterra, our Lake Management Consultant, will be back in August to complete updated mapping. Additional information will be shared as the project approaches. In the meantime, the Board has approved targeted DASH removal of small weed colonies in June. Homeowners in affected areas will be notified once specific locations are confirmed.
For further updates, please visit the Projects + Accomplishments section of our website. There you’ll also find information on several ongoing topics, including:
Wakeboat legislation discussions at the state level, and how certain bill proposals that may impact the lake.
Fish stocking news from late fall and winter of 2025, including details on the unsuccessful 2025 fish stocking effort and a letter from the DNR.
As always, thank you to all residents, volunteers, and partners who help protect and care for our lakes year‑round. Here’s to longer days, returning wildlife, and another season on beautiful Lake Buckatabon.
